How to Create an Email Alias and Configure Webmail

Overview
Nili’s Business Email service allows you to create professional email aliases so you can receive messages sent to multiple addresses within a single mailbox. For example, you can create [email protected] or [email protected] and have those messages delivered directly to your primary mailbox, such as [email protected].

This is especially useful for managing departmental or role-based communication without creating separate mailboxes for each address.

If you’re using the Personal Email plan, please note that a small fee applies for each forwarder (alias) you create, but the setup steps are exactly the same.

This article will walk you through:
• How to create an email alias in cPanel
• How to access and configure your BlueJay Webmail account
• How to send emails using your alias

Before You Begin
Please make sure you have the following:

  1. An active Nili Business or Personal Email plan.
  2. At least one working mailbox (for example, [email protected]).
  3. Access to your cPanel account.
  4. The alias address you want to create (for example, [email protected]) and the mailbox it will forward to.
  5. Verified MX and DNS records for your domain pointing to Nili’s mail servers.

Creating an Email Alias in cPanel

  1. Log In to cPanel
Log in to your cPanel account through your Nili client area. Once you’re in the cPanel dashboard, scroll down to the Email section.
  2. Open the Forwarders Tool
Click Forwarders. This section lets you create aliases (forwarders) that redirect mail from one address to another.
  3. Add a New Forwarder
Click Add Forwarder to create a new alias.
  4. Enter Alias Details
    • In Address to Forward, enter the name of your alias (for example, sales).
    • From the Domain drop-down list, choose your domain (for example, yourdomain.ca).
    • Under Destination, select Forward to Email Address and enter the mailbox where the emails should be delivered (for example, [email protected]).
  5. Save the Alias
Click Add Forwarder to complete the setup. A confirmation message will appear once the alias is successfully created.
  6. Test the Alias
Send an email from an external account (such as Gmail or Outlook) to the alias you just created (for example, [email protected]).
Then, log into the target mailbox ([email protected]) to ensure the message is received.

Note: An alias does not create a new mailbox; it simply redirects messages to an existing one. All emails sent to your alias will appear in the destination mailbox.

Accessing BlueJay Webmail

You can check your mail, manage folders, and send messages directly from your browser using BlueJay Webmail.

  1. Open your browser and go to https://webmail.nili.ca.
  2. Log in using your full email address (for example, [email protected]) and your password.
  3. Once you’re logged in, you’ll see the main mailbox interface where you can read, compose, and organize your messages.

Tip: Bookmark the webmail page for quick access in the future.

Setting Up Your Alias as a Sending Address

If you want to send messages using your alias (for example, so recipients see emails coming from [email protected]), you can add it as a new sending identity in BlueJay Webmail.

  1. Log in to BlueJay Webmail.
  2. Click on Settings (the gear icon in the upper menu).
  3. Select Identities or Send As from the left-hand panel.
  4. Click Add New or Create.
  5. Fill out the following details:
    • Display Name: Enter the name you’d like recipients to see (for example, “Sales Team” or “Customer Support”).
    • Email Address: Enter your alias (for example, [email protected]).
    • Optionally, add a Reply-To address or Signature.
  6. Click Save to apply the settings.
  7. When composing a new message, use the From drop-down to select your alias before sending.

This allows you to manage multiple addresses from the same mailbox seamlessly.

Best Practices

• Use clear, purpose-based aliases such as info@, sales@, or support@ to make your business communication professional and easy to manage.
• Create separate aliases for each department or service to keep incoming emails organized.
• Set up filters or folders in BlueJay Webmail to automatically sort messages by alias address.
• Keep your mailbox storage monitored — all alias emails are delivered into your primary inbox.
• Regularly review your aliases in cPanel to remove any that are no longer needed.
• For Personal Email users, remember that each new forwarder will incur a small fee.

Troubleshooting Tips

If you encounter any issues, here are common causes and solutions:

• Emails to the alias are not arriving – Confirm the alias was added in cPanel and check your domain’s MX records. If the problem persists, contact Nili support.
• You can receive but not send from your alias – Make sure you added the alias as a new sending identity in BlueJay Webmail.
• Webmail login fails – Double-check your full email address and password. If necessary, reset your password through your Nili client area.
• Alias receives too much spam – Consider replacing or removing unused aliases and enabling spam filters.
